As we approach the most holy of days (the one being the true nature of "holiday"...aka "holy day"), I can't help but think about how disappointing it is that there is not more excitement, preparation and joy in this day. Our society really focuses on Christmas and Halloween and other holidays and yet it really seems that Easter gets sidelined. I mean, if Christmas was "created" to celebrate the birth of our Savior, why are we not more excited about the event that PROVED he was the Savior?
Along with the dresses I've made for the girls, I am also starting another tradition for our family. Sure, it's a carry-over from my own family, but that's okay.
See, I think that holidays are the perfect reason for cooking and going the extra mile. I don't particularly enjoy cooking, but I do think that holidays should be a big to-do. I don't mind that there is time to be spent cooking and more to be spent cleaning because I think it all rolls into a labor of love. I hope my children will enjoy it, look forward to it and carry it on as one of their future family traditions, too.

I kind of like that Easter is "side-lined" and wish it was even more exclusively Christian. The holidays that get the most "attention" are those that are secular - are celebrated by (nearly) everyone in this not-exclusively-Christian nation - but I think that the holiest of days in each religion should be more exclusive, and more truly celebrated by those that believe in its importance.
And don't get me started on Christmas - a holiday that is supposed to be about goodwill for all that has been twisted from ancient pagan and natural sources that now mostly causes contention - mostly because people decided years ago to morph pagan celebrations into a birthday party that should actually be celebrated in the Spring, hm. Ok, I got started, and I'm sure there's disagreement there, sorry.
No, actually, there's no disagreement. And, I like the fact that there isn't as much commercialism. My point is that even among many Christians, the holiday is sidelined. I mean, well, I'd be pointing fingers if I specified, so I'll stop. I'm just saying that holidays, no matter the reason, should be celebrated and not pushed aside to be less than what they are.
And, I'm totally with you on the Christmas/Winter Solstice thingy. I have a big problem with the Easter Bunny and eggs, too. I'm all for people celebrating whatever they want, but stop mingling what wasn't meant to be mingled and keep the stories straight.
Now, that probably sounds mean, but I guess I can say that b/c it's my blog, right? lol =)
